KANSAS CITY, Mo—Josh Brown, chief of staff at Kansas City-based investment firm Worcester Investments, integrates faith and work as he lives and leads for the Kingdom. After completing his bachelor’s degree, Josh went from Spurgeon College student to executive staff member overseeing a team responsible for $500 million in assets.
As a high school student with the desire to grow in his spiritual and professional life, Josh decided to attend a campus visit day at Spurgeon College, the undergraduate Christian institution focused on training students for the Kingdom. His campus visit and interactions with faculty and staff reinforced his conviction that business can be a form of missional work and convinced him of the opportunity to study at Spurgeon College.
Throughout college, Josh learned not only the principles and skills required to grow in his professional and spiritual life, but also gained lifelong friends, invaluable experiences, and a new place to call home.
Reflecting on his time at Spurgeon College, Josh shared two experiences that marked his college years. The first was the camaraderie and mutual encouragement found in groups of fellow students. At Spurgeon College, community is key for academic formation and Josh experienced this firsthand.
The second was how much he enjoyed the residential life. The Spurgeon College experience is a testament to the balance of hard work and fun. For Josh, the academic rigor of late-night study sessions at Steak and Shake were matched by the fun of impromptu Nerf gun battles in the dorms.
During his time in Kansas City, Josh’s love for the local church grew as well. The local church helped Josh bridge the gap between academics and the marketplace. Prior to graduation, Josh met Worcester Investments staff members through his local church. He kept in contact with these initial connections throughout his time in Kansas City and received an offer upon graduation to join the Worcester Investments team.
Josh said, “If I had any advice for young professionals seeking to enter the marketplace, I would encourage them to consider their local church. Over the years, it continues to amaze me how many faithful men and women in the church are also faithfully serving the marketplace and accomplishing incredible things that any young professional would want to be a part of.”
At Worcester Investments, Josh’s work embodies the For the Kingdom mission he embraced at Spurgeon College. His role involves leading a team of high-capacity leaders, striving for excellence in all they do. Josh shared, “With an aligned team, you can accomplish something much greater than any individual. It has the potential to make an impact on the Kingdom in a way that is both professionally fulfilling and Christ-exalting.”
Josh also shared how his faith makes an impact on his work. In his role of training leaders, he expressed how understanding people, logic, and worldview are essential for success in business and entrepreneurship. Though leaders can train individuals on technical skills, he said, it is more difficult to shape and mold the mind and lens through which a person sees the world.
“A proper understanding of the foundational principles of worldview shapes the way you make decisions, how you cultivate values and principles, how you approach people, and the stewardship you place on your own role and responsibilities,” he said.
As an alumnus of Spurgeon College, Josh continues to advocate for and mentor Spurgeon College students on how to integrate their faith and work for the sake of expanding the Kingdom throughout the world.
Speaking to Christians called to the marketplace, Josh said, “Consider Spurgeon College. These were some of the most influential times of my life. I left Spurgeon College edified in my understanding of Christ, sanctified in my walk with Him, and it helped create some of the deepest relationships in my life. This foundation, by God’s grace, has created many business opportunities for me that I pray are aimed to make an impact for the Kingdom.”
