A Heart for Japan: Jonatas Cavani

How is God at work in Japan?

I have lived in Japan for ten years as a Brazilian national and served within a network of churches planted in some of the country’s most populous cities. In a nation where Christians make up around one percent of the population, I have seen God at work in the steady growth of church, faithful gospel witness, and believers committed to Christ’s mission.

At the same time, there is a great need for prayer, especially as many pastors in Japan are middle-aged or older and the next generation of leaders needs deeper theological training and preparation. I believe God is strengthening His church in Japan, and it is a privilege to be part of that mission.

How has Midwestern Seminary prepared you?

My time at Midwestern Seminary has equipped me to serve the church by deepening both my theological formation and my calling to train others. Our church has recently started a seminary, where I have been teaching church history. I am passionate about history and theological education, and I desire to see the church flourish in Japan.

There is a great need for mission-minded workers in every sphere committed to advancing the Great Commission in Japan. Through my Ph.D. studies in Church History, I am being better equipped to contribute to training the next generation of Christian leaders and to serve the church through teaching, strengthening both conviction and academic preparation.
