Geoff Chang Releases Spurgeon and the Gospels with Thomas Nelson Publishers

KANSAS CITY, Mo—Midwestern Seminary is pleased to announce the release of Spurgeon and the Gospels, a new title by Geoff Chang, associate professor of historical theology and curator of the Spurgeon Library, and Matt Warren, pastor of First Baptist Chickamauga, GA and Ph.D. graduate from Midwestern Seminary. Published by Thomas Nelson, this latest work gathers Charles Spurgeon’s reflections on the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as revealed in the four Gospels.

“The Gospels feature prominently in the ministry of Charles Spurgeon” said President Jason Allen. “This fact is on full display in Dr. Geoff Chang’s new work Spurgeon and the Gospels. I am grateful that Dr. Chang undertook this project as I know many in today’s church will be edified as a result of reading the Prince of Preachers talk about his Lord and Savior from the Gospel accounts. Read this book if you want to be encouraged and edified.”

For more than a century, Spurgeon’s sermons have continued to shape pastors and churches across the world. Known as the “Prince of Preachers,” Spurgeon’s ministry was defined by his unwavering commitment to proclaiming Christ from all of Scripture. In Spurgeon and the Gospels, Chang draws from that legacy, compiling selections from Spurgeon’s sermons and writings that center on the person and work of Jesus.

“Spurgeon lived and breathed the Bible,” Chang said. “He believed that every page of Scripture ultimately points to Christ. This book helps readers slow down and reflect on Jesus’ life, teaching, and compassion through every chapter of the Gospels, as seen through Spurgeon’s own words.”

For every chapter of the four Gospels, this book features carefully chosen devotional readings, along with the corresponding Scripture text. Through these selections, readers are invited to see, as Spurgeon did, the glory of Christ in the Gospels.

A Devotional Resource for Heart and Mind

While Spurgeon and the Gospels will serve pastors and ministry leaders seeking theological and historical insight, its primary purpose is devotional. “Spurgeon loved the Gospels and he particularly loved the Gospel of Matthew,” Chang said. “Though his wife urged him to rest, one of the last things he worked on was his commentary on Matthew.” According to Susie, this was his meditation as he was “nearing the glories of the unseen world” and “within sight of the golden gates.”

The volume captures Spurgeon’s chapter-by-chapter meditation on Matthew and the other Gospels, as found in his sermons and writings. His reflections move from exposition to worship, from doctrine to application, and from the pages of Scripture to the lives of believers. “Spurgeon reminds us that true Christianity begins and ends with Christ Himself,” Chang said. “The Gospels reveal who He is: our sympathetic High Priest, our righteous King, and our ever-present Lord.”

Through each chapter, readers will encounter Spurgeon’s personal communion with Christ. His meditations on the Gospels highlight the glory of Christ’s humility, the power of His miracles, the beauty of His compassion, and the triumph of His resurrection. Chang hopes readers will not only admire Spurgeon’s words but also be drawn to the same Christ he so faithfully preached.

Continuing the Work of the Spurgeon Library

In his role as Curator of the Spurgeon Library, Chang oversees the preservation and study of Spurgeon’s books, manuscripts, and artifacts. His scholarship and teaching aim to make Spurgeon’s insights accessible to modern readers while encouraging faithfulness in preaching and ministry.

“Spurgeon’s ministry continues to bear fruit because it was rooted in the unchanging Word of God,” Chang said. “He preached to people in every kind of circumstance, those suffering, those rejoicing, those doubting, and always pointed them to Christ as the answer. My hope is that this book continues that same ministry of encouragement and truth.”

Spurgeon and the Gospels reflects Chang’s ongoing commitment to helping the church recover and learn from voices of the past. By reintroducing Spurgeon’s sermons to a new generation, the book seeks to strengthen believers’ confidence in Scripture and deepen their understanding of the gospel.

A Call to Behold Christ

Ultimately, Spurgeon and the Gospels is an invitation to behold the glory of Christ through the ministry of a faithful herald. Spurgeon’s sermons still call readers to repentance, faith, and joyful worship. His words remain as fresh and powerful today as when they were first preached from the Metropolitan Tabernacle pulpit more than a century ago.

“Spurgeon shows us what it means to live a life captivated by Christ,” Chang said. “Every text, every sermon, every prayer was centered on the gospel. My hope is that this collection will help believers today see and savor the same Savior that Spurgeon loved and proclaimed.”
