Biography

Dr. Chang-Hyun Oh currently serves as a Regional Coordinator of Korean Studies at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min. in care and counseling) and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) from Midwestern. To study the relationship between the church and the community, he obtained a Master of Theology (Th.M.) in Christian sociology from Soongsil University in Korea and a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Hanil University & Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Realizing the importance of pastoral counseling in church ministry, he pursued a Doctor of Ministry in pastoral counseling and taught biblical communication for three years at the Counseling and Ministry Academy JeSang. Currently, he serves as an expert advisor for The Psychology Times, a psychology-focused online newspaper in Korea, and as a professor at the Korea HRD Development Institute, a counseling education institution. Dr. Oh integrates musical performance arts with education to conduct age-specific specialized cultural arts education and serves as the representative of Art Company Duru, a musical production organization. He strives to effectively spread the gospel through theater and musicals and works to restore families in the community by merging cultural arts and education.

Dr. Oh resides in Korea with his wife, Jung-Hwan, and their three children: Elim, Urim, and Haneum.

He developed a 12-week biblical communication program to activate koinonia in churches and small communities and is currently writing a book titled Understanding the Heart and Heart-to-Heart Dialogue.

Faculty Q&A

The ‘For the Church’ vision shapes every aspect of my teaching. As a faculty member, I view the classroom not merely as an academic space but as a training ground for future church leaders, pastors, and educators. I design my lectures, assignments, and interactions to equip students to serve the local church with theological depth, biblical faithfulness, and pastoral heart. Whether teaching Christian Education or Counseling, my ultimate goal is to strengthen the Church by preparing students who can teach, disciple, and lead with clarity and conviction, always grounded in the gospel.

Teaching at MBTS is a real privilege for me. What I love about teaching at MBTS is that the classes are grounded in Scripture and intentionally designed to equip future ministers to serve the local church. Furthermore, it’s a true joy for me to walk alongside future pastors who are not only passionate about ministry but also deeply rooted in God’s Word.

The greatest encouragement I receive from the next generation of pastors and ministry leaders is their passion and commitment. I have observed that many of the current students at MBTS have a deep love for Scripture and a clear desire to faithfully serve the Church. For example, one student is actively leading youth ministry with a heart for discipleship, while another is preparing to plant a church with a vision to spread the gospel to underserved communities. Their dedication and willingness to sacrifice for the gospel inspire me greatly, and I am confident that they will make a significant impact for God’s Kingdom, allowing me to continue investing in them.
