Biography

I love to serve local churches as Assistant Dean of Global Campus, home of Midwestern’s online programs, and as Assistant Professor of Christian Studies. Before leading Midwestern Seminary’s online studies efforts, I served in a variety of roles at the seminary, including managing church-based theological education and advising online students. I have been active in serving Southern Baptist churches firsthand as a college and worship pastor, a teaching pastor, and now as one of the pastors of Northside Fellowship, a church plant in the KC Northland.

I am a graduate of Ozark Christian College (B.A., Christian Ministry) and a two-time graduate of Midwestern (M.Div. and Ph.D., Biblical Theology). My dissertation considered the Bible’s use of the “covenant formula” (“I will be your God, and you will be My people”), how that relates to Christ’s session in the “heavenly council,” and why it’s applied to the international church. I’m currently writing (with co-author Joseph Lanier) an introduction to Christian spirituality through the lens of the seven classic virtues (tentatively available fall 2026 from B&H Academic).

Most importantly, I am a grateful Christian and church member, a happy husband to Lauren, and an excited dad of three boys—twins Ebenezer (Ben) and Hezekiah (Ki), and baby Boaz (Bo). Ki’s traumatic brain injury has presented our family many challenges but teaches me every day of God’s love. Lauren and I enjoy drinking good coffee, eating good tacos, inviting friends over for spiritual conversation, and walking with our boys at the park.

Faculty Q&A

In the classes I teach and design, “For the Church” starts with our convictions: we really believe that Scripture is God’s Word and that the gospel is God’s power for salvation. Because we believe that, everything true, good, and beautiful we learn must be applied to our lives, and our lives are deeply involved in our local churches. The textbooks we consider, the assignments we complete, the “so what?” we discuss is all from and for the Church.

Teaching at MBTS is an immense privilege. Yes, it’s encouraging to know that the convictions and vision of this school are aligned with God’s Word. Yes, my family and I have been deeply blessed by the kind and caring relationships we have through MBTS. But most of all, the students I get to serve and learn alongside are godly, mature, humble, and sharp.

I’ve been in other institutions where students would talk about their professor, their classmates, and themselves with reverence based on who they knew or where they were going to serve! Bigger churches and platforms meant higher callings and more Kingdom influence. At MBTS, I am surrounded by men and women who know they are not studying for their platforms but for the Lord’s people, the Church. Even those who have obvious and immense gifts (or even those who already have significant notoriety) are humble and kind. So much talent is being invested in the small things and the unknown places around the country and the world. It’s such a joy to see more and more of those men and women make their way to MBTS!
