JOB TITLE: Student Minister

DEPARTMENT: Ministry Staff

SUPERVISED BY: Discipleship Minister

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION: The Student Minister is responsible to the church for the development and promotion of a comprehensive spiritual, educational, and evangelical program for students in the Shawnee metro area. He will oversee a large, growing student ministry with impact in over ten local schools. The Student Minister serves in this position under the supervision of the Discipleship Minister.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees all ministry programming involving students in 6th-12th grades
  • Directs and promotes student small groups and determines curriculum that is used by each student ministry small group
  • Encourages students in their walk with Christ by developing, coordinating, and leading Wednesday night services
  • Develops and implements a preaching calendar for students, prepares and delivers messages each week to students, and occasionally prepares and preaches in other ministry areas
  • Develops, coordinates, and leads student ministry activities that are focused on reaching students with the gospel of Jesus Christ
  • Recruits and enlists student ministry volunteers and also develops and implements ongoing training for leaders within the student ministry
  • Recruits, enlists, and develops ministry interns, including both volunteer and paid
  • Provides leadership and supervision for the associate student minister and paid student ministry interns
  • Provides opportunities for growth, encouragement, fellowship, and fun by planning and leading camps, mission activities, retreats, and special events for IBC Student Ministry
  • Encourages, informs, and educates students to become involved in the various ministries and activities of the church in order to foster a connection of the student ministry to the body life of the church
  • Works in relationship with Next Generation Ministry staff and discipleship ministry to create a streamlined approach with children, student, and college ministries
  • Manages all media, including social media and communications related to student ministry and/or coordinates with the video and communications director for the dissemination of pertinent information
  • Develops and implements a strategy to minister to students’ families and also seeks ways to assimilate families into IBC
  • Disciples students and encourages them in their growth and development and offers a Christ-like direction and modeling in their day-to-day lives
  • Maintains a visible presence on school campuses and at student activities and special events; also maintains a visible presence before and after services on Sundays and Wednesdays as well as special events in order to connect with students and families
  • Provides pastoral care to students and families in crisis, being careful not to cross any boundaries, beyond a reasonable or common pastoral care level
  • Prepares, honors, and administers an approved budget designed to support and further the ministry to students
  • Works with the Discipleship Minister to coordinate the student ministry within the full discipleship ministry of IBC
  • Understands and adheres to the IBC personnel handbook and the student ministry policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Discipleship Minister, Executive Pastor, and Senior Pastor

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Student Minister must be a professing Christian who exhibits an exemplary lifestyle and personal habits.
  • He will give evidence of a call to vocational ministry and will seek to develop and exercise one’s gifts and abilities through which God prepared him for ministry.
  • He will exhibit knowledge of Next Generation Ministry, specifically ministry to teenagers.
  • With the help of others, he will possess the ability to plan, coordinate, and implement a ministry appropriate for teenagers in 6th-12th grades.
  • A degree in theology and/or ministry from an accredited seminary/university or equivalent experience is considered optimal.

NEEDED ATTRIBUTES:

  • The Student Minister will demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organization and attention to details is needed, as well as the ability to perform a variety of tasks.
  • The Student Minister will be working with others and must have a willingness to modify plans and behavior necessary to meet goals.
  • Professional appearance and conduct are necessary in order to make a good impression on others and in upholding the name of Jesus Christ and the reputation of Immanuel Baptist Church.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Eighty percent of time is used sitting, writing, typing data, talking and functioning at the assigned workstation. Twenty percent of the time is used standing, stooping, stretching, kneeling, and handling workplace material and equipment. Driving for ministry purpose is routinely required. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
