Principle Function
The role of Pastor shall pertain to the spiritual oversight of the church. He is responsible to the church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, to teach Scripture, to engage in pastoral care ministries, and to provide administrative leadership in all areas of the church.
About the Church & Community
Grace Bible Church (GBC), established in 1964, is located in Gettysburg, South Dakota and is affiliated with the Mennonite Brethren Central District Conference. Its Mission Statement is “To know Him and to make Him known.” Weekly attendance is approximately 100 people, comprised of members from various denominational backgrounds. Aside from the Sunday morning worship service, GBC also has Sunday school classes, an AWANA program, and high school and junior high youth groups. The worship service includes both contemporary and traditional music in an informal, yet respectful, setting.
Gettysburg, SD, a town of roughly 1,000 people, is an agriculture-based community near the Missouri River. Larger towns are within driving distance, and hunting and fishing are a major draw to the area. Gettysburg has a K-12 school with an enrollment of 210.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire worship service, plan and prepare sermons, and lead in observance of ordinances
- Lead in witnessing to and caring for the community and the church
- Visit members of the church, especially those in the hospital or nursing home
- Provide counseling services
- Perform wedding and funeral ceremonies
- Work with the deacon board, committees, treasurer, and secretary
- Attend and participate in business meetings
- Represent and communicate on behalf of the church with district and national denominational leaders as well as to the community in civic matters
- Serve as Chief Administrator to paid staff
Qualifications
According to the Biblical standards found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 the candidate must be above reproach, be the husband of one wife, be temperate, be prudent, be respectable, be hospitable, be able to teach, be not addicted to wine or be pugnacious, be gentle, be peaceable. Also, he must not love money, must manage his household with dignity, must not be a new convert, must be of good reputation outside of the church, must not be self-willed, must not be quick-tempered, must not be fond of sordid gain. This man must love what is good, be sensible, be just, be devout, be self-controlled, and hold fast to the faith.
Other Qualifications:
- Be in agreement with our church’s Statement of Faith, available upon request
- Have a Bible degree, preferably a Master of Divinity degree
- Be an expositor of Scripture
- Be able to work with all age groups
- Have pastoral experience (preferred)
