SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the authority of the Associate Pastor of Family Ministries, provide leadership, develop and execute a comprehensive program of Christian development and education for children, preschool through 5th grade, and their families.
ESSENTIAL PASTORAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- As far as can be humanly discerned, this Minister shall:
- Acknowledge Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior
- Depend fully on His wisdom, guidance, and strength for daily activities
- Realize that their performance, dedication, and attitude are under the scrutiny of both mature and weak Christians, as well as, unbelievers. He/she must ensure that his/her actions reflect honorably on Christ and the Church.
- He/she must be called by the Holy Spirit to serve as a Children’s Minister, trained to serve in the capacity to which he/she is called and must be ordained to the gospel ministry.
- The employee must be able to submit to the spiritual authority of the Senior Pastor.
- The employee must be willing to organize himself/herself in such a way so that he/she can attend worship on a weekly basis.
- Demonstrate a Christ-like attitude in performing all work in order to exalt our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Because this individual directly reflects both Jesus Christ and our church membership, it is equally important to serve as a positive witness and influence in all community interactions, as well. This includes:
- Watch over their own individual walk and that of the church body
- Be above reproach, exhibit marital fidelity, self-controlled, sensible, respectable, and hospitable
- Be gentle, not a bully, quarrelsome, or greedy
- Manage his/her own household competently and have their children under control with all dignity
- Abstain from alcohol, tobacco products, illegal drugs, and all forms of pornography
- Demonstrate spiritual maturity
- Have a good reputation both within the church and community
- Depend daily upon God for the wisdom, guidance, and strength necessary for living a victorious Christian life
- Be a model of Christian living for the congregation as a shepherd of our church
- Skilled in personal evangelism and is a demonstrated soul winner.
- Minister to the church family and the community in the following ways:
- Serve as a counselor to those experiencing spiritual and/or financial problems
- Teach discipleship classes, as needed
- Conduct baptisms, as needed
- Minister through hospital visitation in accord with staff rotations
- Serve as staff leader for church-wide projects, as assigned
- Must align in beliefs with the most current version of the Baptist Faith and Message.
SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Worship Leadership
- Lead weekly services for children, ensuring the teaching is biblically sound, while harmonizing the text with current curriculum or Senior Pastor’s sermon series.
- Utilize sensory learning and multi-media to lead the students to a greater understanding of God’s Word.
- Spiritual Development
- Oversee the organization and implementation of the Life Groups for children (birth to 5th grade), including but not limited to workers, class space, curriculum and materials.
- Develop and implement a New Christian’s class for children.
- Provide mission training and opportunities for those involved in the Children’s Ministry.
- Recruit and train lay leadership within the Children’s Ministry.
- Teach discipleship class as necessary.
- Planning and Coordination
- In cooperation with the Senior Pastor, cast and implement a vision for FBCO’s Children’s Ministry, consistent with the vision of the church at large.
- Coordinate the equipment, supplies, layout and physical setting needed to operate planned ministry.
- Provide a balanced ministry plan to include all five biblical purposes of the church (worship, evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, and ministry).
- Develop annual ministry goals and strategies in accordance with the mission statement, core values and vision of the church.
- Support assigned ministries and teams. Ensure that the responsibilities and purposes of each assigned team and its members are clearly defined and executed.
- Special Programming
- Coordinate and direct the VBS and camp ministries of FBCO.
- Equip and support those who lead AWANA, Children’s Choirs, Upwards, and other ministries as deemed necessary.
- Outreach
- Work with the Reaching Team to carry out community outreach efforts.
- Make regular contact with children and their families, ministering when needs arise.
- Regularly engage the personnel, children and families of the FBCA.
- Visit local schools to build relationships with both school personnel and students.
- Minister through hospital visitation in accord with staff rotations or assignments.
- General Administration
- Recommend and oversee annual Children’s Ministry budget.
- Annually review and recommend changes to Children’s Ministry policy and procedure manual.
- Coordinate the nursery schedule.
- Measure results of effort in the areas of enrollment, attendance, outreach, number of units, worker/pupil ratio, leadership development, baptism, etc. Maintain up-to-date charts and/or graphs that accurately compare and reflect historical and current trends.
- Effectively and appropriately use the multiple modes of communication (publications, website, phone, e-mails, social networking) as needed.
- Oversee Children’s Ministry paid support staff. In cooperation with Associate Pastor of Education, rate performance, make recommendations for wage adjustments, select personnel, resolve personnel problems and assign and/or re-define duties.
- Teamwork
- Work with the other Ministerial and Support Staff of FBCO to help accomplish the goals and objectives as set forth by the Pastor and Leadership Council.
- Serve on church Committees, Councils, and Teams as assigned.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Associate Pastor of Education or Senior Pastor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Must have the education and experience needed and necessary to properly fulfill the specific job functions and responsibilities of the position of Children’s Minister.
- Must have the ability to plan, organize, direct, and control the Children’s Ministry of a dynamic and growing church.
- Must be willing and able to establish performance measurements and be accountable for expected results.
- Must have demonstrated ability to supervise other individuals.
- Must have demonstrated ability to develop leaders through coaching and training.
- Must have the ability to deal effectively and tactfully with church personnel, members, and the general public. Must be able to relate a positive image of the church to employees, members, and the general public. Must be a team player.
- Must be capable of administering church policies and procedures.
- Employee must be a good steward with the resources (time, money and supplies) God has provided to FBCO.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work involves handling stressful situations, working under pressure and handling of sensitive and confidential information.
- Work can include extensive travel and irregular working hours. Work will require time both in and out of the office, often in excess of 45 – 60 hours per week.
- Work may involve supervising a variety of paid and voluntary positions.
