Church Overview

The purpose for which the congregation of First Baptist Church of Manistee has existed, from the very beginning, is to preach the Gospel, and as ambassadors of Christ, to let others know there is forgiveness and hope for a dying world in the message of that Gospel.

On October 20, 1872, thirteen believers in Christ met to organize the First Baptist congregation in Manistee. It was their desire that all people worship with them and within one year five nationalities were represented: Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, and English, all working and worshiping together for the glory of God.  The first pastor was Peter Jentoft. Different pastors came and left just as the population of Manistee went up and down. The church has moved around to different buildings until 1975 when the land on Lakeshore Road was purchased.  The new church building was built and dedicated on May 7, 1979. The church’s indebtedness was paid off in March 1997. Our current average attendance is between 75 and 100. The current ministries of our church, besides the missionaries that we support, are our Wednesday night Bible study and small groups. We are a primarily English-speaking, contemporary Baptist congregation with average ages between 37-55.

Community Overview

Manistee, Michigan is a small community located at the mouth of the Manistee River on the shore of Lake Michigan. The 2010 census reported our population was around 6300. From 1836-1848, much of the Manistee River Valley, including Manistee itself was an Ottawa Reservation. During the lumbering era of the late 1800s, Manistee became a significant site for lumber mills. Huge numbers of white pine logs were floated down river to the port at Manistee and eventually on to the lumber markets of Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, and Chicago. Manistee is still known for its beautiful Manistee National Forest which provides year-round recreational opportunities of skiing, hiking, bird watching, and hunting. It is also famous for its Forest Festival around July 4th every year. This four-day event draws thousands of tourists to the area. Some of the events are an art and craft show, parade, fireworks over Lake Michigan, carnival rides, trolley rides to tour the area, and so much more. We also have a Victorian Sleighbell parade and Old Christmas weekend every year in December.

Manistee has a State Park, several golf courses, three public beaches, museums, an opera house, and other attractions. There are two ski resorts near the city of Manistee – Crystal Mountain and Caberfae Peaks. Over 40 charter fishing boats operate on Lake Michigan from Manistee county ports. Fishing in the Manistee River can yield salmon and steelhead. Several small lakes in Manistee and the surrounding area are good for catching bass, perch, and other pan fish. There are many disc golf courses, mountain biking trails, and hiking trails all over Manistee county.  It is home to three factories on Lake Michigan: Packaging Corporation of America, Morton Salt, and Martin Marietta.
