Job Description Effective February, 2025
Reports To: Senior Pastor*
Position Status: Full Time Exempt
Primary Function: The primary role of this position is to direct, coordinate, supervise and continuously develop a comprehensive program of children’s education directed at children and families.
* In the event and during the period of the Senior Pastor position being vacant, supervisory responsibility for the Associate ministry positions falls to the Board of Deacons
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Pray.
- Teach the word.
- As a member of the Church’s ministerial team, participate in all the ministerial duties such as visitation, outreach, administration, counseling, and staff meetings.
- Visit the sick and homebound. Deliberately evangelize to the local community.
- Counsel, encourage & build up the local body of Christ. Meet with & seek help for those who seek benevolence and charity.
- Fulfill administrative duties assigned by the Senior Pastor. Attend other activities and programs as the Senior Pastor directs.
- Be the ministerial Liaison with assigned committees.
- Oversee existing and create new programming for all children through 6th grade, including Sunday morning, Wednesday evenings, summer VBS programming, and other special events as necessary & as directed by the Senior Pastor. Ensure you maintain a broad focus to include ministry to the parents of children and nursery students.
- Provide supervision and oversight to the Nursery, including hourly employees and volunteer staff.
- Coordinate and cooperate with the Youth Pastor to ensure no gap exists as your children grow into his youth ministry. Don’t allow children to age out of the Children’s ministry before they are provided with direct shepherding into the Youth ministry.
- Choose and prepare curriculum for each program and each age level.
- Create environments, activities and programs for each age group that facilitates learning and encourages spiritual growth.
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise and lead teams of volunteers to accomplish these goals.
- Provide ministerial care for children and families within the church including hospital and in-home visits and follow-up.
- Maintain a strategy for reaching and assimilating new children and families.
- Plan, oversee and recruit volunteer workers for special events such as VBS, Trunk or Treat, baby dedications, family excursions and summer camps.
- Oversee, train and schedule both employed staff and volunteers to work in the Nursery Department.
- Develop and work within a budget which is approved by the Church.
- Help supervise and assist with the annual I Love Odessa local mission event.
- Plan and conduct deliberate outreach to families within the Church to conduct camps, excursions, and outings that purposely involve fathers, mothers & siblings in the event.
- Develop and implement an ongoing effort to lead outreach into the local community.
Requirements:
- Born again Christian with a call of God into ministry
- Willing to become a member of the First Baptist Church of Odessa
- Love and enthusiasm for family ministry
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Ability to build, inspire and lead teams
- Must have thorough & deep understanding of the Bible & the implications of the Gospel
- Must have the ability and desire to reach people with the Gospel, both one-on-one and in a group setting
- A degree in an education or ministry related field preferred
- Experience in children’s ministry is preferred
