JOB PURPOSE
To support the Chief of Security in safeguarding the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Midwestern) community, maintaining a safe and secure environment for education and community life, by combining strategic leadership with operational excellence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Community Policing & Engagement
- Assist the Chief of Security by implementing and leading standard community policing practices to foster a secure, inclusive campus atmosphere.
- Engage proactively with the campus community to educate, inform, and involve them in safety initiatives.
Emergency Preparedness & Response:
- Communicate to the Security team the comprehensive preparedness plans for a range of emergency scenarios, ensuring Midwestern’s readiness to protect life and property while upholding our values of care and community.
- Availability on a 24/7 on-call basis for emergencies is a crucial expectation for this role.
Training & Professional Development:
- Assist with the implementation of comprehensive a training program for security officers, including:
- Policy and procedure
- KCPD Private Officers Licensing Standards
- Combat profiling
- Verbal judo
- OC spray
- Power handcuffing
- Ground defense
- Defensive tactics
- Handgun retention
- Gun range time
- Taser training
Personnel Management and Ongoing Professional Development:
- Oversee scheduling of Security personnel to accommodate sick days, vacation, paid time off, etc.
- Oversee patrol activity on campus.
- Oversee and evaluate personnel performance within their respective shifts.
- Provide weekly briefing to Security team, highlighting the campus’ weekly needs. (opening doors, adjusting hours of operation in Security Systems, Special Events, Patrol needs and expectations. etc.).
- Function as the intermediary between staff and the Chief of Security in the chain of command.
- Evaluate daily log entries by personnel.
- Instruct and provide feedback concerning written incident reports by personnel.
- Check and process key requests for residents on campus.
- Assign monthly PoliceOne Training for Security personnel and track completion.
- Availability for the necessary completion of certifications to cultivate professional standards (Taser Instructor Certification, Defensive Tactics Certification, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
Include, but not limited to:
- Christian with high integrity, actively pursuing a relationship with God.
- Ideally, 20-30 units of college credit in Psychology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, Communication, or a similar subject.
- Must hold a KCPD Private Officer License or be able to obtain a license within one month of employment with Midwestern.
- Experience in Law Enforcement, Security, or a similar profession.
- Strong conflict resolution and interpersonal ability
- Strong personnel management skills
- Bilingual in English, and Spanish or Korean is highly valued.
- Able to multi-task, analyze workload, and prioritize as necessary for the benefit of the department.
- Must possess a strong attention to detail.
- Able to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Must be able to work independently, as well as a part of a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Must possess a positive attitude.
- Must be able to show a desire and willingness to learn.
- Must possess a clean criminal history with no pending court actions.
- Must be able to pass background screening, including driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm
- Provided a Midwestern Security vehicle for use during work hours.
- Security personnel residing on campus are awarded a $100 per month reduction in housing cost.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must regularly stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- May be required to sit or stand for periods of time at a desk or computer station.
- Able to lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds.
- Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting may be required.
