Midwestern Seminary announces Doctor of Ministry degree now offered fully online

Posted November 10, 2021 by Michael S. Brooks

As Midwestern Seminary continues to make its advanced degrees more accessible to a broader range of students, it has recently announced that its Doctor of Ministry degree program is now available fully online.

“We are thrilled to expand our portfolio of accessible, online degrees with the express aim of training and equipping ministry leaders for faithful service within their local church contexts,” Midwestern Seminary President Jason Allen said.

“Along with a robust curriculum and access to an extraordinary faculty, our professional doctoral degree programs help to round out the ministry leader’s toolkit by equipping leaders for day-to-day decision-making, strategic planning, sermon preparation, team development, and more.”

With multiple emphases available, Midwestern Seminary’s D.Min. program focuses on practical theology for direct church work and ministry leadership. The purpose of the program is to develop Christian leaders through doctoral level instruction, research, and practice.

Online Doctor of Ministry degree offerings will begin in Spring 2022, starting with the Doctor of Ministry degree with a concentration in leadership.

By offering professional doctoral degrees via online learning, Midwestern Seminary hopes to extend opportunities for theological training to a broader base of ministry leaders, especially those desiring to remain in their current ministry settings.

“We have been privileged to offer a great on-campus experience for students enrolled in our traditional modular programs,” Midwestern Seminary Provost Jason Duesing said. “But now, with innovative approaches to course delivery and recent modifications to accreditation standards, we are able to extend these same experiences to ministry leaders around the globe. Pastors and missionaries can pursue an advanced degree while applying what they’ve learned in real-time in their current ministry context.”

Traditionally, Midwestern has offered modular courses with weeklong on-campus class sessions, along with pre- and post-session coursework. Many courses within the fully online D.Min. program can now be accessed asynchronously, allowing students to receive seminar content both in real-time and at their own convenience.

Along with live interactive content, each online seminar will allow for text-based exchanges among seminary participants through Discussion Boards, workgroups, and similar modalities.

The program’s online D.Min. with a concentration in leadership offers elective seminars in such areas as Christian Leadership, Developing Christian Leaders, Current Leadership Issues, Worship Leadership, and Spiritual Formation.

“The online D.Min. in Leadership is an important step for our online doctoral degree offerings,” said Thor Madsen, dean of doctoral studies at Midwestern. “We are excited to continue offering new, accessible avenues for more students to train with our gifted faculty for gospel ministry in their local contexts.”
