CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEER NEED – Due to an unforeseen group cancellation, there is a vital need for volunteers during the week of June 7-12 for the chapel construction project.  The main work that will take place is framing and “drying in” the building so future groups can continue on course.  Please remind anyone you talk to that there is absolutely no skill-level required – only a willingness to work hard.  Please pass this need on to your church members and anyone you know who would be willing to work on the chapel project!  Also, if you’re planning to volunteer during the summer, this is a week you are asked to seriously consider.  To sign up, contact Rhonda Nichols in the VP for Business Services’ office at rnichols@mbts.edu or at (816) 414-3747.

PRESIDENT’S DAY/SPRING PICNIC

Midwestern’s Student Development office will host a Spring Picnic in honor of President’s Day on May 4 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., at the Gazebo area behind the men’s dorm.  (In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place in the Koehn-Myers Center.) BBQ will be provided, but it is requested that those attending bring the side dishes and desserts. If you are married: bring 2 sides or 1 side and 1 dessert. If you are single: bring 1 side or 1 dessert.  There will be a moonwalk for the kids, and it'll be a great time of fun and fellowship. See you there!

REV. BILLY RUSSELL TO SPEAK IN CHAPEL ON TUESDAY, MAY 4

He holds a B.A. in Religious Studies/Religious Education from Southwest Baptist University (’85), a M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (’90) and a M.S. in Counseling from the University of North Texas (’93).  He has hopes of finishing his D.Min. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary before Jesus returns!                He has been at FBC Bolivar since Nov. 1999 – initially as Associate Pastor/Esquire Pastor (a theater outreach ministry) and as Pastor since January 2006.  He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Russell is a member of the Bolivar Area Ministerial Alliance, Vice-Moderator of the Mid-lakes Baptist Association and a member of the Board of Trustees at Southwest Baptist University.

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER – In 1775 – The first Continental Congress called for a National Day of Prayer; in 1863 – Abraham Lincoln called for such a day; in 1952 – Congress established NDP as an annual event by a joint resolution, signed into law by President Truman; and in 1988 – The law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, designating the NDP as the first Thursday in May. This year’s National Day of Prayer will be held on May 6, and the chapel will be open all day for anyone who wishes to go there for a time of prayer. Another activity surrounding the event is “24 Hours of Prayer” on May 8 beginning at midnight and ends on May 9 with a corporate prayer and worship time at 11 p.m.  To sign up for an hour of prayer, visit the MBTS library or e-mail Sonia Blank at sblank@mbts.edu.

SBA ELECTION RESULTS – As a result of the Student Body Association elections held on April 27-28, the following officers have been elected for the 2010-2011 school year:  President – Jack Belcher; 1st Vice President – Jesse Spencer; 2nd Vice President – Sonia Blank.  Congratulations and please pray for the new SBA officers as they lead in the upcoming year!

UTILIZING VOLUNTEERS COURSE - The Utilizing Volunteers in Christian Ministry course is being offered this summer on July 12 for both graduate and undergraduate credit. As part of the course, students are required to volunteer for one day on the chapel project (full tuition).  They will receive the discounted rate of $100 if they volunteer for two days, there will be a complete waiver of tuition if they volunteer for three or more days.  We have an urgent need for volunteers during the week of June 7.  For more information, please visit the Registrar’s Office or e-mail Dr. Rodney Harrison rharrison@mbts.edu to obtain a syllabus and sign-up information.

STAFF & STUDENT VOLUNTEERS FOR CHAPEL PROJECT For any staff or students wishing to volunteer for this summer’s chapel construction project, response forms will be handed out at chapel for the rest of the semester.  If you are unable to attend one of these services, the forms will be available at the VP of Business Services’ office in the Administration Building (next door to the Registrar).  Once a list is compiled, the information will be forwarded to Builders for Christ, who will then assist in finding a good fit for your skills and dates to serve.  Please see Rhonda Nichols for more information.

FIRST FRIDAYS LUNCH - The WISDOM program hosts a monthly pizza lunch for all of the ladies connected to Midwestern.  This luncheon takes place from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Student Center area outside of the LifeWay Campus Store. Please join us for a great time of fellowship and fun! For more information, contact Leslie Umstattd at (816) 414-3770 or by e-mail at lumstattd@mbts.edu.

STURGIS EVANGELISM COURSE AUGUST 5-9, 2010 - Earn academic credit while ministering with NAMB, the Dakota Baptist Convention and the Midwestern Seminary FAITHRider Chapter. You don’t have to ride to share your faith at the world-famous Sturgis Bike Rally in August. Housing will be provided for those who pre-enroll by June 1. Transportation and meals are up to the student. Participants will be trained in using the “3 Minute Story” evangelism strategy. For more information, contact Dr. Rodney Harrison at rharrison@mbts.edu.

CHAPEL CONSTRUCTION WEBCAM - If you would like to keep up with the construction progress of the new MBTS chapel complex, it is now possible via a construction webcam.  The webcam updates every three seconds, so you will receive up-to-the-second pictures!  Anyone can view the construction area from the seminary’s website www.mbts.edu homepage, then click on the Chapel Construction Update Button or the scrolling construction banner as it appears. This will take you to the Chapel Construction Update page where there will be information about prayer needs for the project and summer team leader comments for volunteers.  One other location of the webcam is on the MBTS Intranet site.  Check it out!

CAMPUS MAIL - Students are reminded of their responsibility to collect their papers from their campus mailboxes on a regular basis. If anyone has forgotten his box number and/or combination, e-mail gbarnes@mbts.edu or visit the mail room in the business office.

PODCASTS NOW AVAILABLE ON WWW.MBTS.EDU - Were you unable to attend chapel services anytime in the recent past?  If so, and you’d like to catch up on the chapel messages, the MBTS A/V, IT and Communications Offices have made this possible via podcasts.  The podcast link is located on the right-hand side of the www.mbts.edu homepage just above the “What’s Ahead?” section.  Currently, podcasts dating back to April 2007 are available.

EVANGELISM RESPONSE CENTER - Would you like to share the gospel and minister to people across North America without even leaving your own home? The Evangelism Response Center (ERC) is part of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. It exists to share the Gospel and pray with people over the telephone and Internet. Respondents contact the ERC by phone and Internet after seeing the ERC telephone numbers and Internet addresses on TV ads and programs, radio ads and programs, tracts, print ads, articles, and billboards, etc. The ERC provides a network of volunteers throughout North America who have been trained to communicate the message of Jesus Christ to people by telephone and internet. These Telephone Encouragers and Internet Encouragers make up a new and exciting category of Southern Baptist missions volunteers. You can now share the Gospel with receptive people from all over the United States and Canada from the comfort, safety, and privacy of your own home!  For more information, please contact Allen Reger at 816-365-8108 or by e-mail at allenreger@gmail.com.

PULPIT SUPPLY - Fully admitted students and alumni are eligible to participate in our Pulpit Supply program. Local churches often need someone to fill the pulpit, and many students relish the opportunity to gain experience and to preach to a congregation. Midwestern works to connect local churches with students who are interested and eligible. Students may sign up for the program in the Student Development office. If you are a church seeking an individual to fill a pulpit, please contact Amy Gilmore at agilmore@mbts.edu or 816-414-3735.
