posted in Weekly Updates, on Feb 22, 2010 byCHAPEL MESSAGE BROUGHT BY REV. STEVE DIGHTON, Tuesday, Feb. 23
Rev. Steve Dighton has been the Senior Pastor at Lenexa Baptist Church since 1990. Prior to Lenexa, he was the Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church in Piedmont, Okla. Dighton received his education at Dallas Baptist University and holds two degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before his call to the ministry, he enjoyed a career in the men's clothing business. While serving as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher at his home church, First Baptist of Ada, Okla., he felt God's call to full time service. The Dighton family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, so he could follow God's leading and attend seminary. Since that time, God has confirmed that calling in many ways. His wife, Mary Dighton, D.D.S., is in private practice in Lenexa. The Dightons have two sons, Chase and Derek. They also have three grandchildren, Cooper, Allison and Johnathan.
MIDWESTERN’S DR. PHIL ROBERTS BRINGS CHAPEL MESSAGE, Wednesday, Feb. 24
Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees unanimously elected Dr. R. Philip Roberts as the fourth president of the Kansas City-based Southern Baptist seminary in Jan. 2001. Since arriving, Roberts has overseen steady growth in MBTS’s student population, assembled a top-tier faculty, launched Midwestern Baptist College, SBC, implemented a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program, and expanded the school’s campus by purchasing the Koehn-Myers building, constructing housing facilities and renovating many of the campus’ existing buildings. Roberts began his duties in Feb. 2001, after a seven-year tenure with the North American Mission Board, where he served as vice president for the Strategic Cities Strategies Group. In addition to pastoring international churches in England, Germany and Belgium, Roberts has extensive experience leading and teaching evangelism and discipleship courses throughout Europe. Roberts received his Ph.D. from the Free University of Amsterdam, conducted post-graduate research at Oxford University, received the M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and the B.A. from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. He is the author of several books, including Mormonism Unmasked and The Counterfeit Gospel of Mormonism, as well as having served as executive director of the Mormonism Unmasked and The Cross and the Crescent interfaith videos. He has also contributed to numerous theological journals, opinion pages and Christian publications. Roberts and his wife, Anja, have two children, Naomi and Mark.

OTHER NEWS & INFORMATION

HOMES NEEDED - Homes are needed for volunteers from out-of-town attending the Chapel Project Coordination Meeting here on March 12-14. If you have an extra bedroom available and would like to house a volunteer over the weekend, please e-mail Pat Hudson at phudson@mbts.edu.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - The Chapel Project’s Logistics team is seeking volunteers to serve on various subcommittees related to the new chapel construction. If you are interested in serving on the housing, transportation, food service, Welcome Team, VBS, or toilets subcommittee, please e-mail Pat Hudson at phudson@mbts.edu. Service on the committee will also count toward volunteer service for the “Utilizing Volunteers in Christian Ministry” course.
ACCORDANCE BIBLE SOFTWARE SEMINAR – The Kansas City seminar will take place at Midwestern on April 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will consist of two sessions with a break for lunch. You may bring a laptop if you wish, but it is not essential since the demonstration will be projected. There will be an opportunity to update and add to your Accordance program, but it is recommended that you download version 8.4.3 ahead of time. Seminars are suitable for users of Accordance or individuals who would like to observe and learn more about the program. You will receive coaching on the original language features as well as the use of general interface, searching capabilities, graphics, and other features. The seminar is FREE to all attendees. Please register by March 29 by sending an e-mail to seminars@accordancebible.com.
SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE - Full time MBTS students committed to a church-related vocation are eligible to apply for the Northgate Baptist Church: Ottsie & Reuben Trogdon Scholarship Fund. Scholarship grants are $1000 each. The deadline is May 1. Applications are available in the MBTS Financial Aid Office or from northgatebaptist.org. Go to the link "About Us" and then the link "Forms"
HESTER CONFERENCE - WISDOM will host the annual Carolyn Hester Conference on campus on April 9 - 10. The cost is $20 per student or faculty wife. Registration is open and the first 50 MBTS registrants will be eligible for a $50 gift certificate drawing to be held the weekend of the conference. Please contact WISDOM at (816) 414-3770 or cmaynard@mbts.edu for more information and registration.
CAMPUS ROAD/PARKING UPDATE - It’s an exciting time at Midwestern! Construction for the new chapel on campus is slated to begin soon. As with any project involving growth, there will be some changes to be expected. One such change is that the road between the Administration Building and the Trustees Classroom Building will be blocked to parking and through traffic. As a result, traffic flow to the Trustees Classroom Building will be rerouted via the east parking lot (behind the Admin. Building), and those using the parking spaces along the road will need to use alternate lots. The current route will be closed off within the next week or two, and the completion of the new roads will be open to public access in late October or early November. Thank you for your prayers and patience through the construction process. The end result will glorify God and be well worth the wait!
UTILIZING VOLUNTEERS COURSE – In conjunction with the upcoming chapel construction project, MBTS will offer a course this spring and summer semester called, “Utilizing Volunteers in Christian Ministry.” The course will take place March 12-13 and will give all involved a better understanding of how to recruit, organize and motivate volunteers for church-related efforts. Sections of the course will be led by Lawrence Corley, director of Builders for Christ. The two-hour course will be offered for $100, and will require one day of volunteering during chapel construction. However, if an enrolled student volunteers for two or more days, the enrollment fee will be waived. For more information, contact the Registrar’s Office at (816) 414-3756 or by e-mail at registrar@mbts.edu.
MIDWESTERN MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP - The Midwestern Missions Fellowship will have their next meeting on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in the Downing Room of the KMC. The Missions Fellowship is for all students (college and seminary) and faculty who are interested in International and North American missions. This is not just for students who plan on going to the mission field, but for all of those who are supportive of missions. A free meal is provided for those who R.S.V.P. to Julie Harrison by Thursday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at jharrison@mbts.edu.
SUMMER CHURCH PLANTING OPPORTUNITIES IN CHICAGO - The Parachute Project is a unique opportunity in that a team of 4 students will be placed in a priority area where there is currently no church planting. They will then serve as an advance team to test the soil for church planting and develop relationships that we pray will transition into Bible studies. We are looking for mature, self-starting students who -- with training and coaching -- desire to gain church planting experience and make an impact in a world-class city. We have discovered that teams perform best when they originate from the same place and know each other. This is a partnership with the North American Mission Board (NAMB). If you are interested, please contact Dr. Gus Suarez as soon as possible at gsuarez@mbts.edu .
EUROPE STUDY TOUR 2010 - Join Drs. Mike McMullen, Thor Madsen and Rodney Harrison for the Europe Study Tour 2010 to Germany and Switzerland. The dates are June 18-July 3, and the cost is $2,200, including up to 7 hours of academic credit (graduate or undergraduate). A week-long extension (and 3 additional hours) is available for $500. For more information, contact Mindy Akright at makright@mbts.edu, or drop by the doctoral studies office.
TUTORS NEEDED AT MISSION - The City Union Mission is seeking tutors for its after-school program Mondays through Thursdays from 4 - 5 p.m. (for the community) and from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. (for guests in the shelter). The folks at the mission are requesting volunteers to help out either occasionally or regularly if possible. For more information about tutoring, contact Travis Bradburn (816) 329-1417 or Kalie George (816) 329-1430 at the Mission or by e-mail at travis@cumission.org and kalie.george@cumission.org.
REQUEST FOR SPECIAL MUSIC - Anyone interested in presenting special music for Wednesday chapel services should contact Dr. Eric Foley at 414-3750 or by e-mail at efoley@mbts.edu.
EVANGELISM RESPONSE CENTER - Would you like to share the gospel and minister to people across North America without even leaving your own home? The Evangelism Response Center (ERC) is part of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. It exists to share the Gospel and pray with people over the telephone and Internet. Respondents contact the ERC by phone and Internet after seeing the ERC telephone numbers and Internet addresses on TV ads and programs, radio ads and programs, tracts, print ads, articles, and billboards, etc. The ERC provides a network of volunteers throughout North America who have been trained to communicate the message of Jesus Christ to people by telephone and internet. These Telephone Encouragers and Internet Encouragers make up a new and exciting category of Southern Baptist missions volunteers. You can now share the Gospel with receptive people from all over the United States and Canada from the comfort, safety, and privacy of your own home! For more information, please contact Allen Reger at 816-365-8108 or by e-mail at allenreger@gmail.com.
PULPIT SUPPLY - Fully admitted students and alumni are eligible to participate in our Pulpit Supply program. Local churches often need someone to fill the pulpit, and many students relish the opportunity to gain experience and to preach to a congregation. Midwestern works to connect local churches with students who are interested and eligible. Students may sign up for the program in the Student Development office. If you are a church seeking an individual to fill a pulpit, please contact Amy Gilmore at agilmore@mbts.edu or 816-414-3735.
