Dr. Gus Suarez teaches church planting and church growth at MBTS and serves as Director of the Nehemiah Center for North American Church Planting. He received a D.Min. from Golden Gate Seminary, earned a M.Div. from Mid-America Seminary and holds a B.S. degree in physical education from the University of Maryland. Prior to accepting his position at MBTS, he was executive director and treasurer for the Northwest Baptist Convention. He's served in state conventions for 22 years and has been a North American Mission Board-appointed missionary for over 20 years. He has been a pastor and church planter in Buffalo, N.Y.; a language catalytic missionary for the Baptist Conventions of Maryland and Delaware; a language missions director for the Baptist Convention of New Mexico; and director, Division of Mission Ministries Baptist Convention of New Mexico. Suarez’s research interests include selected topics in the areas of cultural issues and the church. He and his wife, Diana, have two sons, Philip and Matthew.
ERLC’S DUKE TO SPEAK IN CHAPEL - Wednesday, Oct. 28
Barrett Duke has served as V.P. for Public Policy and Research, and Director of the Research Institute of the ERLC since 1997. As V.P. for Public Policy and Research, he directs the work of the ERLC’s advocacy arm in Washington, D.C. As such, he communicates Southern Baptist convictions to elected and public officials to influence the development of sound public policy. As Director of the Research Institute, he oversees the research and collection of information on pressing moral and religious liberty issues. Barrett has worked with legislators and government agencies on policy issues including abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, pornography, religious liberty, same-sex marriage, and stem cell research. Barrett graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Bible from Criswell College. He received an M.A. in Old Testament from Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary, and he received a Ph.D. in Religious and Theological Studies from the Iliff School of Theology and the University of Denver.

The Midwestern Food Pantry is located in the Koehn & Myers Center (lower level, back side), and is available to all admitted MBTS students and their families. It is generally open on the fourth Thursday of each month from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Students may pick up food only for themselves and immediate family members (not for roommates or neighbors).

Maj. Rick Carroll, director of the local Salvation Army congregation located just across N. Oak from our campus, has graciously agreed to allow Midwestern students to use their beautiful, new gymnasium. If you and some friends or family would like to use the facility for basketball, volleyball, etc., just call their office first to confirm availability. Carroll said daytime hours are best. SIZEMORE LECTURES - Dr. Mark Seifrid, a New Testament Interpretation professor at Southern Seminary will be the guest speaker during the Sizemore Lecture Series at 10 a.m. on Nov. 3 & 4 in the Midwestern chapel. RECITAL - Jeff Class will be presenting a graduate recital in the chapel on Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
HAYRIDE & S’MORES - We’ll be pulling out the tractor and offering hayrides on campus beginning at 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Koehn & Meyers Center fire pit. There will be hot dogs and S’mores around the fire, but please bring drinks for your family. FIRST FRIDAYS PIZZA LUNCH - All women on campus are invited to First Fridays Pizza lunch and fellowship, provided by the WISDOM office. It takes place on Nov. 6 in the Student Center (downstairs in Classroom building outside LifeWay) from 12-1:30 p.m. There will be a special LifeWay Storytime for the children. Please bring your own drinks.
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR PASTORS AND CLINICIANS – The National Coalition for the Protection of Children & Families will be providing a workshop at MidAmerica Nazarene University, presenting skills and resources to equip pastors and clinicians to help strengthen marriages. The workshop will take place in Cook Center of the Hager Lecture Hall on Nov. 6 from 5 - 7 p.m. and on Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday evening. Sandwiches and snacks will be served Friday and lunch will be provided on Saturday. Participants who attend the entire workshop will receive certificates signed by the presenters to confirm 9 hours of completed Continuing Education Credits. Register by Oct. 30 to receive the discounted rate of $125 for individuals and $100 per person, for groups of three or more. After Oct. 30, the individual rate is $150 and $125 per person, for groups of three or more. Students may attend for $50. TUTORS NEEDED AT MISSION – The City Union Mission is seeking tutors for its after-school program Mondays through Thursdays from 4 - 5 p.m. (for the community) and from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. (for guests in the shelter). The folks at the mission are requesting volunteers to help out either occasionally or regularly if possible. TUNEFUL THURSDAYS FOR KIDS - Tuneful Thursdays is an exciting new choir offered on campus this fall to school-age children (grades 1-6). Each Thursday from 4:00 – 4:45 p.m., trained leaders will be guiding children in learning how to sing, read music, and worship God through activities that include playing instruments, moving to music, creations, singing, and playing games. Tuneful Thursdays will begin Oct. 22 and conclude Nov. 19. Enrollment is free, but limited. Please call the music office at 414 – 3750 to reserve a place for your child.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD – Share God’s love during the Christmas season by packing a shoebox with gifts for a hurting child overseas. To participate, bring a gift-filled shoebox or come and pack a box at the LifeWay campus store on Nov. 14. At the LifeWay store, there will be gift items available for purchase and supplies to use for packing the gifts. NEW SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE - If you are a full-time master’s, D.Min., or Ph.D. student who was a resident of Georgia and endorsed by a Georgia Baptist church at the time of enrollment, you may be qualified to receive a new scholarship that’s available to MBTS. For spring 2010, the Georgia Baptist Foundation Seminary Scholarship for $300 is now available. EVANGELISM RESPONSE CENTER - Would you like to share the gospel and minister to people across North America without even leaving your own home? The Evangelism Response Center (ERC) is part of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. It exists to share the Gospel and pray with people over the telephone and Internet. Respondents contact the ERC by phone and Internet after seeing the ERC telephone numbers and Internet addresses on TV ads and programs, radio ads and programs, tracts, print ads, articles, and billboards, etc. The ERC provides a network of volunteers throughout North America who have been trained to communicate the message of Jesus Christ to people by telephone and internet. These Telephone Encouragers and Internet Encouragers make up a new and exciting category of Southern Baptist missions volunteers. You can now share the Gospel with receptive people from all over the United States and Canada from the comfort, safety, and privacy of your own home! ATTENTION GRADUATING STUDENTS - Applications for graduation are due in the Registrar’s Office no later than Dec. 17. Graduation application forms are available in the Registrar’s Office or on the website under Admissions/Helpful forms/Academic forms. A graduation fee of $150 for doctoral graduates; $125 for graduate/undergraduate students; or $45 for Diploma for the Ministering Wife/Certificate students will be due by May 1, 2010. This fee includes your picture, diploma, academic apparel, etc. If you plan to graduate on May 22, 2010, be sure to submit your application before Dec. 17, 2009.
PULPIT SUPPLY - Fully admitted students and alumni are eligible to participate in our Pulpit Supply program. Local churches often need someone to fill the pulpit, and many students relish the opportunity to gain experience and to preach to a congregation. Midwestern works to connect local churches with students who are interested and eligible. Students may sign up for the program in the Student Development office.
