DOCTORAL - FAQ

Following are some frequently asked questions, with answers from Dr. Rodney Harrison, Midwestern's doctoral director:

Q: When can I begin the program?
A: The program is designed for those who have three years of ministerial experience following the completion of a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree or Master of Arts in Christian Education (MACE) degree (or equlivalency).

Q: What is the cost?
A: The cost of the D.Min. degree is $4,950 for Southern Baptists; $6,600 for D.Ed.Min. program. Also, extra expenses include books and approximately $200 for additional supplies. Tuition can be paid on a monthly, quarterly, yearly or lump sum basis.

Q: How much work does it involve?

A: Seminars are five days long. Students are required to take six seminars for D.Min. program; nine for D.Ed.Min. Both include a dissertation. Seven book reviews, a project and a 15-30 page exit paper are customary assignments with each seminar.

Q: How much reading will there be?
A: Approximately 1,200-2,000 pages each seminar. Q: Where are seminars located? A: Most of the program’s seminars are located at the MBTS campus.

Q: What GPA do I need?
A: A 3.0 GPA out of 4.0 for unconditional admission is needed. A 2.8-3.0 GPA requires that students take the Miller Analogy Test.

Q: Do you offer Internet courses?

A: Currently there is only one Internet course offered.

Q: How long does the program take?

A: The D.Min. program can be finished in six semesters; the D.Ed.Min. is designed for completion in eight semesters. Seminars are offered nine months out of the year.

Q: Can women be admitted into the program?
A: Yes, provided they meet the requirements of the program.

Q: Is this like a terminal degree?

A: Yes. The D.Min. program is considered a professional degree. The primary difference between a Ph.D. program and a D.Min. is that a Ph.D. is more focused in an academic setting with more library-oriented research. The D.Min. programs are focused on field research in practical ministry situations.

Q: What are the degree emphases available?

A: For the D.Min. program, there are four emphases available: Proclamation, Evangelism, Care, Leadership, Church Revitalization and Church Planting. For the D.Ed.Min. program, electives can be tailored to focus on a particular age group.
